Choices must be made when deciding on your destination. But choosing is losing. And in Scheldeland there's no need to choose. You can combine them all. Certainly if you head towards Wetteren. Wetteren and its surroundings are characterised by peace and nature with a touch of culture, not to mention great gastronomy and wonderful walks and bike rides. And if that's not enough, in Scheldeland you can visit three magnificent castles. The perfect destination to leave the daily grind behind. We have great memories of our weekend in Wetteren.
We stayed close to the Kalkense Meersen, a wide nature area with various animals as striking inhabitants. It is also one of the innovative flood areas to be found in Scheldeland. Between the green, various walking trails are signed for you. We chose the Stuifduinen Walking route along the Scheldt. With this, Wetteren was able to demonstrate that dunes are not something for the seaside and are also charming here.
Small and pleasant is how you could describe Wetteren centre. You can wander or shop your way through the streets. Wetteren has a rich history that you easily sense in places like the café Posthotel, a protected monument. The interior with its neo-Renaissance style, takes you all the way back to 1887.
Beside café Posthotel there is also St Joseph's chapel, another magnificent building in Wetteren. You can spot the building by its impressive golden dome. However, St Gertrude's church should certainly not be missed on the list of religious treasures. The building combines Romanesque, Gothic and Byzantine elements. Inside you will see an exhibition of puppets in the original costumes of 130 sister congregations.
On Sunday we went back in time with a visit to the impressive Laarne Castle. The moated fortress dates back to the 13th century. You can still sense the soul of the castle as you stroll around the estate, which is beautifully maintained. It seems like you have travelled back to the Middle Ages. Young visitors will also enjoy the visit tremendously, thanks to the treasure trails provided. The gnome trail (3-5 years), the photo trail (5-9 years) and the exciting witches adventure ‘Heintje Heks hunts the key to the treasure’ (9-12 years).
Another way to explore the castle is the brand-new movie guide “Heksen” (Witches). Priest Jan Schatteman and cleaning lady Josyne guide you through the castle, from the lounges to the prison cells. They tell you all about the alleged witches of Laarne. Those paying close attention may also notice that the priest doesn't tell the full story and is Josyne really telling the truth?
Sadly, we only had time to visit Laarne Castle, but there are more castles nearby as well. You should definitely visit Bornem Castle, one of the most beautiful moated fortress in the region. A unique experience thanks to its unique architecture. D’Ursel Castle is also worth a visit. The imposing interior with Oriental influences is sure to make an impression. Afterwards you can enjoy the park, which is popular for picnics, and with runners and walkers.
We stayed the night at B&B De Stuifduinen in Wetteren. The owners of the B&B made us very comfortable. Our room had a wonderful view of the Scheldt scenery and tree nurseries, which are abundant in Wetteren. In the morning, breakfast is served in your room. A delicious basket filled with fresh produce and local delicacies. We breakfasted on the delightful private patio with the rising sun. A perfect start to the day.
A bigger appetite will also be satisfied in Wetteren. At Bistro Mr. Gustaaf we enjoyed a delicious dinner in a beautiful setting and for a decent price. Herberg Prullebos will surprise you with various snacks. In the summer it's delightful on the terrace, relaxing in a deckchair. In the winter months you can warm yourself up by the fireplace.
In other words, you'll find every ingredient for a relaxing weekend.
